The Capital to Host “Sofia Game Week“

Information technologies are among the most dynamically developing industries and account for 5.7% of Sofia’s economy

“This week, the Bulgarian capital hosts “Sofia Game Week“. This event is important for Sofia. There the young will have the opportunity to show their talent and experience. Our city has established itself as a place with well-developed IT sector.“ Commented Sofia’s Mayor Mrs. Yordanka Fandakova, in her greeting speech at the “Sofia Game Week“, attended by His Excellency Mr. Lebedel, Ambassador of France to Bulgaria and His Excellency Mr. Salber, Ambassador of Germany to Bulgaria. According to Mrs. Fandakova, in recent years Sofia proved to be a true regional ICT hub with over 40 000 people, employed in the IT sector. Information technologies are among the most dynamically developing industries and account for 5.7% of Sofia’s economy

Game development accounts for over 20% of the economy. “I am sure that these achievements of Sofia were made possible by several factors – highly qualified and well-educated people, working here, the investments in public infrastructure and the overall development of the economy. I believe both professionals and innovative young people form Sofia’s greatest capital.“ continued Mayor Fandakova.

For the Sofia Municipality, the development of the IT sector means new jobs. In order to encourage and develop this sector, the Sofia Municipality has started organizing hackathons, where we assign specific tasks and support the winning contestants in developing their ideas. We already have several start-ups, originating from such hackathons.

“Sofia Game Week“ is organized by the Embassies of France and Germany and will take place in three consecutive days at the cultural institutes of France, Germany and Poland. Such initiatives provoke thought, creativity and inventiveness among the young and encourage creative approaches and the education among the youth.
