Sofia received the "Eco-Municipality" Award in the category "Waste Management" in the competition, organized by the French Embassy. His Excellency Ambassador Lebedel gave the award to Sofia’s Mayor Mrs. Yordanka Fandakova. This is the second edition of the "ECO-MUNICIPALITY" competition, organized by the French Embassy in Bulgaria, and it enjoys ever increasing interest among the representatives of the local governments. The prize was awarded to Sofia’s Mayor Yordanka Fandakova by His Excellency the Ambassador of France in Bulgaria Mr. Lebedel and the Minister of Environment and Waters Neno Dimov in the presence of the Deputy Minister of Regional Development Denitsa Nikolova.
“Congratulations to Sofia, because we owe this award to the results, which we are achieving by developing the Integrated Waste Management System, with European funding.” Sofia’s Mayor Mrs. Yordanka Fandakova said. He explained that these results have been achieved thanks to the support by the public, by the European Commission, the central government and a lot of hard work.
“We have constructed green and bio waste facilities and Mechanical Biological Waste Treatment Plant, producing RDF. The compost facility processes separately the green and food waste collected, which is then used to produce electricity and compost, as a part of it is then used once again in the city parks and gardens and given away for free to the citizens who have paid their "household waste collection" fee.
The Mechanical Biological Waste Treatment Plant receives mixed household waste, which is then used to produce fuel from waste, which will then be utilized for the co-generation of electricity and thermal power at "Toplofikatsia – Sofia" EAD. This facility will complete the waste management system.
