Ninth edition of Sofia Independent Film Festival

The fans of independent cinema will be able to enjoy Sofia Independent Film Festival for the 9th consecutive year in the days between 26 October and 3 November, when Sofia will become the hub of world cinema. The Cinema House, Lumière Lidl, Odeon, G8 and Euro Cinema will screen movies from 4 continents, “because honest is the new sexy”! The festival will take place, as part of Sofia Municipality’s Calendar of Cultural Events for 2018.

The festival officially opens on 26 October at 19:00 h at the Lumière Cinema with the biopic McQueen, telling the story of the life and career of the fashion designer Lee Alexander McQueen – from his first steps as a tailor, through the launching and management of the fashion line, bearing his name, and until his early death. The film is directed by Ian Bonhôte, and co-directed by Peter Ettedgu.

Over 30 films will compete for the prestigious awards in the three categories: feature film, documentary and short, and the non-competition programme will ensure encounters with the best titles on the global cinema posters in the past 12 months, carefully selected by Festival’s new team.

On the last day of the festival – 3 November, from 19:30 h at the Lumière Lidl, cinema aficionados will have the chance to see the scandalous American-British drama “The Miseducation of Cameron Post“.

Premiered on the big screen in January, earlier this year, this coming-of-age movie quickly won the sympathies even of critics. The film tells the story of several students. After being caught with another girl in her prom night, Cameron is sent to a gay conversion therapy centre.

With her film, the director - Desiree Akhavan tells a contemporary story, which often remains neglected, due to its nature. Everybody who sees this fil, will know what impact have such centres on adolescents and whether they actually help or confuse them even more. In the campus Cameron meets people with similar views, who become her friends, but she also has to face a reality, which does not correspond with that of her own.

The film stars Chloë Grace Moretz (Cameron), Sasha Lane (Jane), Quinn Shephard (Coley,) etc.

Back in January “The Miseducation of Cameron Post“ won the big price at the Sundance International Film Festival.

During the Sofia Independent Film Festival Bulgarian spectators will be able to see this film on the big screen for the first time. This screening will put an end to the ninth edition of the Independent Cinema Festival in Bulgaria, as the other non-competing films, include: „Little Italy“, “Hotel Artemis“, “Wakefield“, “Butterfly“, “Stronger“, “The Glass Castle“, “Only the Brave“, “Tully“, “The Mercy“, “The Whisky Robber”, “November“, “Arctic“, “First Reformed”, “A Fantastic Woman“, “McQueen“, “Anger“, “Crossroads“, “Waiting Room“ and "Vanitas“.

We will also see the Academy Award winner Twin Towers, and its cinematographer Scott Hillier will be Festival’s special guest between October 26 and 30. Furthermore – the Festival, organized by Hillier, will be a partner of the Sofia Independent Film Festival.

Sofia Independent Film Festival is a part of Sofia Municipality’s Calendar of Cultural Events for 2018.
