Church of St Francis of Assisi at the Monastery of the Carmelite Friars was founded in 1899.

In 1940 Carmelite sisters settled in small houses around the church, and later, in 1952 at the time of victimization of the Catholic community, they were subjected to persecution.

Today the church is managed by the Carmelite Friars, who serve Byzantine Catholic Liturgies.
