Nadezhda Kuteva presents her "Places and Rituals" in an exhibition at the Sofia City Art Gallery

Nadezhda Kuteva presents her "Places and Rituals" in a new exhibition at the Sofia City Art Gallery, the hosts announce. The exhibition will open on March 19 at 6 p.m. and can be viewed until May 25.

The exhibition traces the two main directions in the author's work - from her graduation from the Art High School in Sofia in 1964 to her latest works.
"I try to ensure that my painting has a visual adequacy of ideas that can come from music or words. For example, in Rhodope songs, the melody is smooth, unison, etc. I try to bring this into image through the clear lines and silhouettes of the figures, while also achieving a clear rhythm. The leading motif is the balance of the compositional elements, as well as the rhythm of the volumes in space. I would like to fill the small plane of the painting with a clear rhythm," says Nadezhda Kuteva, quoted in the announcement.

Gathered from various collections, her paintings in "Places and Rituals" reveal an artist who not only recreates her sense of nature and atmosphere, but also manages to depict melody. Whether she paints figures on the seashore or on the hills of the Rhodope Mountains, lazarki, scenes from the life of St. Nicholas, fire-fighters, saints descending from the walls, or women with baby carriages in the park - they are all depicted as participating in their own, strange, ecstatic and humble ritual.

Nadezhda Kuteva was born into the family of Philip Kutev - composer, conductor and folklorist and Maria Kuteva - music teacher. She graduated from the National Academy of Arts in 1971 with a degree in "Mural Painting", after which she turned to easel painting. She participated in numerous national and international exhibitions, and has presented her work independently over 20 times. She is the winner of a number of awards, including "Zlatyu Boyadzhiev" (1986), "Vladimir Dimitrov - The Master" (1990), "Zahari Zograf" (2022).
