Обратно Fandakova: Separate waste collection is extremely important for the air quality

“The correct separation and disposal of combustible municipal waste – including large-size waste, construction waste from people’s homes as well as tires and textile – are extremely important for the air quality in our city”, emphasized the Mayor of Sofia, Yordanka Fandakova, in a welcoming speech before the participants in the Third International Conference (Benefit as You Recycle) “Separate waste collection for cleaner air”, organized by Sofia Municipality. She stressed on the existing system in Sofia Municipality for separate waste collection and disposal of different flows of waste, which recognizes 12 types of waste and reminded of the connection between the disposal of combustible municipal waste and the ambient air quality. “The more informed we are about where and when to dispose of the various types of waste, the less of this waste will be wrongfully disposed and incinerated from the mixed containers, polluting the air”, the Mayor pointed out.

The means of waste collection and disposal of different types of waste were presented in detail during the conference and an emphasis was put on the public awareness.

“We turn to all citizens who are planning to dispose of potentially combustible waste other than packings, to first check on sofia.bg/waste where and how they can do this in the most ecofriendly manner”, stressed Yoana Hristova, Deputy Mayor of Sofia Municipality for ecology. She reminded that 8% of the particulate matter polluting the air originates from organized and unorganized sources and to a great extent this is caused exactly by the incineration of combustible waste.
