Back Fandakova: Modernization of the Sofia Zoo continues

Another stage of the modernization of the Sofia Zoo was completed which on May 18, 2018, celebrated 130 years since its foundation by Prince Ferdinand I in 1888. In 2017, we have fully renovated and modernized the cages of the big cats and now we opened the extension for the suricates and the Old World porcupines.

The expansion of the primates sector is forthcoming, said the Mayor of Sofia, Yordanka Fandakova.

Expansions and repair works are done according to the requirements of the European Association of Zoos and Aquariums (EAZA). Our goal is to become full member, which will allow us to exchange animals with other zoos.

On the Sofia Zoo anniversary, we launched SMART Applications, VIPS SOFIA ZOO, which can be downloaded free of charge for all devices and used in the zoo. It provides additional information about the different types of animals - photos, videos, text and audio recordings related to their feeding, breeding and habits. We started with information on 24 species of animals and will expand it gradually. The release of the English version of the application, which will contain the equivalent of the Bulgarian language version, is forthcoming. All visitors to the Zoo will be able to enjoy free Wi-Fi network in the Big Cats, Aquarium and Terrarium Hall and in the area of the small predators’ enclosures and learn many new interesting facts about the inhabitants of the Zoo!
