Car exhaust fume processing systems checked
Every driver who wishes to check his or her car emission levels can at the initiative of Sofia Municipality do so for free within a month.
The 7 gas analysis tools bought by Sofia Municipality have started operating today, 4 January 2018, at the Traffic Police’s points of initial registration with the Sofia Directorate of the Ministry of Interior. Cars without a working exhaust gas processing system will not get an initial registration in Sofia. This is an important measure for clean air.
Every driver who wishes to check his or her car emission levels can at the initiative of Sofia Municipality do so for free within a month. This is what the mayor of Sofia Yordanka Fandakova said in the presence of the Minister of Environment and Water Neno Dimov, the Deputy Director of the Sofia Directorate of the Ministry of Interior Anton Zlatanov, and the Director of the Traffic Police Commissioner Tencho Tenev.
According to expert analysis, 60% of fine particulate matter pollution in Sofia is due to road traffic. The research we have done with the Spanish laboratory showed that about 7 % of the cars contribute to ¼ of the pollution. Our measures are aimed precisely at these technically faulty cars, Mayor Fandakova said.
Solid fuel heating is another significant source of fine particulate matter. We are working together with Nino Dimov, the Minister of Environment and Water, to have standards for coal and wood, and our goal is for only low-ash and low-sulphur content energy sources to reach the market by the next heating season.
Limiting the burning of waste materials is an important priority and we are actively working for it. The campaign for the collection of end-of-life tires, performed by Sofia Inspectorate teams, proved to be extremely successful.
Inspections of car workshops on whether they use waste oil for heating are continuing. The number of times bulky waste is collected has also been increased.
