Fandakova: Over 600 000 spring flowers were planted, of which over 300 000 tulips

‘We plant spring flowers in the city parks and gardens. More than 600 000 spring flower bulbs have already been planted, of which 300 000 tulips’, said Sofia Mayor, Yordanka Fandakova, when planting new bulbs of specially cultivated in Holland tulips Serdika in the "Kliment Ohridski" garden with Deputy Prime Minister, Ekaterina Zecharieva and Her Excellency the Ambassador of the Netherlands, Bea tan Tusscher. About 3000 tulips, planted in the garden in front of Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski" were specially selected in honour of 110 years of diplomatic relations between the Netherlands and Bulgaria and are a gift to Sofia.

‘In recent years, Sofia has become a colourful and green city and this is my personal cause. Sofia is one of the most colourful and green cities among the capitals. There are more tulips on the streets of Sofia than in the Netherlands’, said also Fandakova.

Sofia received the first gift of tulips from the Netherlands for the coloured figure in the logo of the Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of Europe.

‘Flowers to me are not only beauty, but also education of children. We plant flowers and trees with children and pupils in the yards of kindergartens and schools’, said Fandakova. This year, 2 818 tulip bulbs, as well as other spring flowers and over 700 different deciduous and coniferous trees were distributed to 143 kindergartens and schools.
