Back Аlbum Rebirth of the star Bulgarian soprano Sonya Yoncheva and the conductor Leonardo Garcia Alarcon

Yoncheva's fourth solo album as part of Sony Classical

The spring quarantine in 2020 brought something positive  – time for  the star Bulgarian soprano Sonya Yoncheva and the conductor Leonardo Garcia Alarcon to create the album they have been dreaming of for 10 years.  Rebirth carries a gentle message of hope, but also addresses the idea that silence and inertia are the perfect introduction to creative rebirth.  Yoncheva's fourth solo album as part of Sony Classical captures a musical heritage spanning  five  centuries – from folk to pop songs, during some of the most influential moments in 17th century opera.

According to Sonya, any music can be contemporary . "Some styles in musical compositions surprisingly continue to excite us even after 500 years , because  the y combine  a huge  emotional charge with majestic ease," she said.

From the  era of Monteverdi's opera and music, the album Rebirth is a thematic journey from Italy to Cavalli, his pupil Strozzi and heir Stradella, to England by Dowland, Gibbons and Ferrabosco – whose phrase "O Hear me, O God" is used as a simple in the song “Like an Angel Passing Through My Room” by ABBA. Apart from dance-inspired works from Spain and Latin America, and the reconstruction by the conductor Alarcon of an aria by Antonio Draghi, Yoncheva also presents a traditional folk song from our native Bulgaria.

"This project is extremely important to me. With it I want to emphasize the eternal quality of this music and the feeling of infinite freedom that gives us. This is an appeal to rebirth and recovery, which our world desperately needs," added Sonya.

Rebirth was recorded at La Chaux-de-Fonds, along with Alarcon and his ensemble Cappella Mediterranea during the first quarantine due to the Covid pandemic. The collection comes out on March 12  Sonya Yoncheva was named "Artist of the Year" by the readers of Opera magazine for 2019 and is a regular guest at the most iconic operas around the world. The Bulgarian soprano received a lot of praise in the media after performing the repertoire of the album during the festival in Salzburg in August 2020.

From the beginning of March, Rebirth will be on music stores and streaming platforms around the world.  The first single and a video of it are of great interest among music lovers.  At Yoncheva's insistence, the video was shot  in Bulgaria by a Bulgarian team. The director is Emma Konstantinova, and the cameraman is the winner of "Golden Rose" Rumen Vassilev.  The video features footage from the Rhodope Mountains, Pobitite Kamani, Belogradchik Rocks and the Maritsa River. The album, along with the classical repertoire, has two songs – the Bulgarian "My Faded Lamb" and "Like an Angel Passing Through My Room" by "ABBA", for which which the world-famous soprano receives the blessing of Benny Anderson from the Swedish band.

Whether Yoncheva will perform the two songs at the concert with Placido Domingo in front of the St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral on August 31 in Sofia will become clear soon when the repertoire of this performance is announced. Yoncheva and Domingo will take the stage at 8 pm together with the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Naiden Todorov.

The main partner of the musical event is the Sofia Municipality, which is already preparing a special organization of the space in front of the cathedral. The Ministry of Culture is also a partner of the event.
